Teen arrested over Belconnen 'SURGE' graffiti tags

Police have arrested a man and accused him of being responsible for spraying the graffiti tag "SURGE" around Belconnen on numerous occasions.

An 18-year-old Canberra man will face court next year after police say they found him with spray paint and wearing paint-spattered clothes near fresh graffiti in Scullin.

Police said officers spotted the man in dark clothing walking across Kingsford Smith Drive about 2.30am Thursday.

When police spoke to him, they noticed different coloured paint stains on his top, pants and boots. He was also carrying a shopping bag containing six aerosol spray paint cans.

A short time later, police saw a large amount of fresh graffiti that included the word "SURGE" on a Colorbond fence.

The man was arrested and charged with property damage.

"ACT Policing is aware of numerous graffiti incidents in the Belconnen area including the word 'SURGE'," they said in a statement.

Anyone with information about graffiti in the Belconnen area was urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference 6204712.
