Street Outlaws street racers Farmtruck and AZN visit CIT ahead of Summernats

A pair of celebrity street racers stopped in to lend a hand at the Canberra Institute of Technology ahead of the Summernats car festival on Thursday.

Farmtruck and AZN from the Discovery Channel's Street Outlaws series had flown all the way from Oklahoma City to work with students at CIT's Fyshwick campus.

The pair had been working with CIT automotive and metal fabrication students to turn a clapped-out Chevy truck - shipped over from the United States - into a souped-up drag racer.

CIT student Chris Wroe said the team had been working flat out to get the truck ready for the start of the Summernats festival.

"It was meant to be here three months ago," he said.

"But there was a bit of a hold-up and it only arrived three weeks ago. The whole time I was sitting by the phone itching to get started with the project."

The Street Outlaws team would be filming a special Summernats episode of their show while visiting Canberra.

AZN, whose real name is Jeff Bonnett, said the friendly welcome he received at last year's Summernats event had convinced him to come back again in 2018.

"We came here last year and it was great. Everybody was so accomodating."

Street Outlaws is a reality television series that centres on the underground street racing scene in America's Oklahoma City.

Farmtruck, whose real name is Sean Whitley, said once the truck was completed, they hoped to leave it in Canberra as a reminder of their visit.

"We hope to leave it here for a while at least so the CIT students get some use out of it," he said.

"Or at least until they are sick of it. Hopefully it will bring a few people out to the campus to see it."

The head of CIT's automotive department, Steve McMahon, said the collaboration with Summernats and Street Outlaws was a great thing for students.

"The apprentices' experience and journey within this project will support the future generations of the high-performance industry," he said.

Summernats is an annual event that has been held in Canberra every year since 1987.

It is expected that as many as 100,000 people will attend the event over four days from January 4, with almost 2000 entrants registered for 2018.
