Summernats road closures and diversions prompt warnings of traffic delays

Canberrans are being warned to expect congestion in north Canberra while Summernats is on this week.

ACT government traffic management manager Robyn Hawkins said some roads would be closed, and others would have changed conditions. These were in parts of Watson and Braddon, beginning Thursday January 4 and finishing Sunday, January 7.

It's Summernats time again.

Roads closed

  • Stirling Avenue will be closed between Knox Street and the Federal Highway from 10am Thursday to 7pm Sunday.
  • Lonsdale Street will be closed between Cooyong Street and Girrahween Street from 9pm to 1am on Friday and Saturday.
  • Elouera Street will be closed between Torrens Street and Mort Street from 9pm to 1am on Friday and Saturday.

Changed traffic arrangements

  • Left turns will be prohibited from Flemington Road onto Randwick Road during peak times.
  • The speed limit on Flemington Road between the Federal Highway and Sandford Street will be reduced to 40km/h.

  • There will be extra parking north of Exhibition Park, via Sandford Street or Old Well Station Road.
  • There will be "No Parking" and "No Camping" signs on both sides of Northbourne Avenue and the Federal Highway.
  • There will be designated "drop-off' and "pick-up" areas on Randwick Road. People will not be able to drop off or pick up people on Flemington Road.
  • Parking officers will be active in the area during Summernats, looking for illegal parking, with a particular focus on "pedestrian and vehicle line of sight safety issues".

Delays and detours

  • Delays are expected on Northbourne Avenue and the Federal Highway near Exhibition Park.
  • Light rail construction work will keep going on Flemington Road, causing more delays.
  • Motorists are encouraged to use Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue as alternative routes.
  • Motorists travelling to and from Gungahlin are advised to use Gungahlin Drive.

Alcohol free zones

  • There will be alcohol free zones on Aspinall Street, Morisset Road, Stirling Avenue, Northbourne Avenue, Lonsdale Street and the Federal Highway. Parts of Old Well Station Road, Flemington Road and Phillip Avenue will also be alcohol free, as will the parking area north of EPIC and the parking area at the corner of Randwick Road and Flemington Road.
